Game Help: Salabouncing

Salabouncing (click here to play) involves a poor Baby Salabounder who, apparently, has fallen several miles high from his home. The goal is to get back up there and return the Baby Salabounder safely to his home. You do this by jumping from leaf to leaf which propel you upward (powerups also propel you upward too). Can you get back up there?!

The Controls

Simply using your mouse to guide the Baby Salabounder from leaf to leaf. The Baby Salabounder will trail behind your mouse as you move it. Simple enough, huh? :) But, remember, you’re just one wrong leap away from game over!

The Points System

Here are all of the point values for each leaf (or powerup):

The Points System
10 pts
20 pts
15 pts
Creates more leaves.
25 pts
Boost ~5m.
25 pts
Dispatches parachute for a few seconds.
25 pts
Flys you upward for a few seconds.

The more leaves you hit, the more points (and consequently, more Meteorites)!

Tips and Strategy

Here are some strategies and tips shared with us by Rowena, a high-score placing Salabouncing player:

There are different techniques for getting different things. Your technique for getting a highscore may be very different to the one you are using to get right up to the top.

The best tip I can give, for those who can either barely get off the ground or at a medium skill level, for getting high is to use a delayed landing technique. This technique is very safe, but it makes the game very long.

When you bounce of a leaf to jump to one above or more upwards then across, instead of trying to crash into the leaf above so you fly up quickly without pausing, try to maneuver to beside the leaf just slightly and land on the TOP of the leaf as the salabounder falls down. Why is this useful? When you get to around 400m, the leaves begin to become more thin on the ground, so if you shoot upwards you may find yourself looking for a leaf frantically. If you delay the landing onto the leaf, you can pinpoint a leaf to land on before being launched again. This technique also gives you a great deal of control, as if a large leap is coming up you have a few moments to ready yourself before taking the plunge, which makes all the difference.

Finding out the limits of the Salabounder is very important. It can actually jump MUCH further then you imagine, half way across the screen. Very rarely do you actually meet an “impossible” jump, it’s just you have to move VERY quickly to make some jumps. If you tend to fall before you reach 200m, I suggest playing around with seeing how far it jumps up and how far across (missing leaves and taking higher ones, or ones further across the screen). Once you have mastered the controls of the Salabounder, you’ll find things much easier.

When trying to actually get up the tree for the achievement, avoid hanging about to get every leaf. You will not need the points to get the achievement. Try and skip leaves where it is safe to do so, as they can serve as a safety net if the leaves do run out on one side of the screen and you have to get to the other by dropping down.

When choosing a path up the tree, treat all powerups and gold leaves like normal leaves. Do not get distracted by the idea of more points. A lot of the time, the power-ups (particularly the beans) are more risky then helpful. However, if you are a beginner at the game, do try and go for glowing leaves if they are reachable (never go all out for one) as they provide more leaves above you and make it easier to proceed for a short while. During the 600m-800m period, they will very much be your friend (the leaves become less sparce around 800m).

There is a very different technique to getting a highscore then to making it as easy as possible to get to the top of the tree. If you look at Dodo’s highscore (of around 28,000), he did not reach the top of the tree, yet he had almost the same amount as me when I got to the top, purely from using an effective point-making technique.

Sometimes it’s also difficult to tell where the Salabounder is really going to land, when jumping from leaf to leaf. One important technique that you can use is the background/Salabounder alignment technique. To use this technique, when moving from leaf to leaf (particularly in a big jump) look at the vertical lines of the edges of trees and other shapes in the background. This will help you land the Salabounder on the right leaf.
