Game Help: Sap Refinery

Sap Refinery (click here to play) is a puzzle-like game in which you have to separate sap into different color combos before they can be used by the Canopy Elves. The Sap Floe never stops, so it could be one long day for your worker in the refinery!

The Goal

The sap comes in ten exciting color (black, blue, aqua, green, grey, yellow, white, purple, orange, and red) and the goal of the game is simply to group together three or more sap of the same color.

It is also possible to create chains of combos in the game. A chain reaction happens when one or more combo is created by the new arrangement of the board after the removal of one combo as it appears on this screenshot:

The Controls

The current active sap is displayed in one of the seven circles at the top of the game board while the four next colors are displayed to the left of it. Press the spacebar to swap your active sap with the next one in line. To position the sap in the column of your choice, use your mouse by clicking the left mouse button.

The Modes

Sap Refinery is currently available in four modes: boring, timed, level, and chain.

In boring mode, you play the game until you are bored. You don’t have any restriction apart making sure you don’t fill completely the board with sap.

In timed mode, sap will drop down on your board regulary and constantly into the refiner. You can’t allow yourself to take a break when you play in that mode!

In level mode, you have to create a certain amount of combos in a limited amount of drops. If you don’t meet the target, it’s game over.

In chain mode, you have to create sap chain combos in a limited number of drops. If you don’t meet the target, it’s game over too.

The Scoring

The scoring is different in each mode. In boring mode, you earn 1 point per sap you clear from the board. This means that for a combo that contains three sap, only 3 points are added to your score. In level mode, each sap has a value of 5 points. This value goes up to 10 points per sap in timed mode. If you decide to play in chain mode, each sap is worth 20 points.

In addition to the basic scoring system, chains create multipliers. The second combo of a chain is affected by a 2x multiplier while the third one is affected by a 3x multiplier, etc. The bigger is the chain reaction, the more points you get!

The Powerups

Powerups can be hidden inside sap of any colors. Some of them are more helpful than others, so make sure you know their respective effects!

Randomly changes some of the sap on the board into green sap.
Multiplies the points of the combo by 5.
Multiplies the points of the combo by 2.
Adds a line of sap on the top of what is inside the refiner.
Shuffles sap that are inside the refiner.
Disconnects sap of the same color inside the refiner.
Removes all connected sap inside the refiner.

Tips and Strategy

Use powerups wisely! Many of the powerups can be really nasty when you are trying to align sap together in level and in chain modes. When you have many saps attached together, try to avoid the grub and the break up powerups, as they are going to ruin your work. Because you can’t afford to have them down in the refiner, put them in a corner and make sure they don’t touch sap of the same color.

Think ahead! This game is very much about anticipation and you have to take into consideration the sap that are in line before taking your move. In level and chain mode specifically, thinking ahead is what makes the difference between reaching a higher level or dying early.

Maximize chains! Because of score multipliers, the best way to increase your score is to rely on chains. If you can include a powerup bonus through the chain, it’s even better as they are doubling your points!

Sap Refinery can easily become a challenge for your mind. It is also possible to unlock 4 different achievement by playing it: Grey Day and Sap On The Back are specific to Sap Refinery, while 90210 and 2468 can be unlocked in any flash game. (Visit our achievement solutions page.)
